Mezzanine
(From The Album "Too High")
I saw a lady die by the grocery store Shaking from the Lysol she had drunk the night before No one stopped to wonder why the ambulance was slow We just stood there thinking, "There but for the grace of God I go." We're all standing on the mezzanine, one flight from the street I push my shopping cart down the grocery aisle I fill it up with frozen food and chocolate ice cream bars Maybe come tomorrow I will push my cart outside With a little sign that reads, "Won't somebody tell me why?" We're all standing on the mezzanine, one flight from the street Got no more pity for the suffering man No easy dollars in the palm of my hand You are closer than I want you so much closer than before I can't get ahead if I give you any more. We're all standing on the mezzanine, one flight from the street
